Rise Academy in Action
After all of our workshops we, of course, ask for feedback and comments from all involved so we can make sure we are constantly evolving and improving what Rise Academy offers. Here is what people have said about our recent courses;
“Rise Academy has set a new standard in delivery and quality of experience.”
“As a school, we work with a large number of external companies that provide opportunities for our students, but Rise Academy has set a new standard in delivery and quality of experience. I was so impressed with the planning, resources, structure and outcomes from working with rise academy. Our students had a brilliant time, gaining new skills and insights about the Media and Broadcast industry. The staff and volunteers were so professional and supportive with our students. Thank you to Rise Academy for a genuinely excellent week.”
“As a volunteer, I enjoyed every moment…”
“In an industry that leans heavily on both who and what you know, it’s so refreshing to see an initiative that aims to get more diversity into broadcast.
The response from the students was overwhelmingly positive. At a surface level, the activity was a lot of fun, but scratch below that surface and there was something really special going on: these students were taking the initiative, problem solving and discovering that broadcast careers can be fun and rewarding.
It’s true that you get out what you put in. As a volunteer, I enjoyed every moment and I thank Rise for leading on this inspiring programme.”
“I learnt to switch cables, images, and direction! I enjoyed how we problem solved under pressure!”

“I can’t speak highly enough about our recent trip to a Rise Up workshop at Mulberry UTC in Bow…”
“Frankly, I can’t speak highly enough about our recent trip to a Rise Up workshop at Mulberry UTC in Bow. All the volunteers were incredibly welcoming and supportive of the girls; furthermore, the activities were very well structured, encouraging teamwork and demonstrating real life STEM applications in the world of broadcasting to the children very successfully. The quiz show at the end was such a great idea – a really fun way to end an amazing day that the children couldn’t stop talking about on the bus home!”
“It was so refreshing to let the children learn in this capacity…”
“I was lucky enough to be able to volunteer with one of the weeks of the rise academy workshops teaching children of the ages 15-16. At first some children appeared apprehensive when told to build the studio, they were given boxes of cables, equipment, and a system diagram. They had to rely on each other as a team and their problem-solving abilities. However, sure enough they found their confidence after plugging in their first correct cable and realising that this was something they too could do, it was no longer an unreachable expectation. Not only were they working in their own individual teams, but they were learning how to work with different departments.
It was so refreshing to let the children learn in this capacity, giving them the freedom to figure out themselves through trial and error, despite the cost of the equipment, how the system worked. They were able to be proud of what they accomplished as they truly did do it by themselves, and one of the main reasons I believe the rise academy was so successful.
I gained much from the week myself, learning different departments from the other volunteers, being able to discuss their career paths and routes they took, but most importantly meet new people and feel part of the industry, something very exciting due to the fact I’m still a student myself. The main purpose of these workshops was to introduce the children to a world of broadcasting, and I can confidently say that was achieved. Students who didn’t even know these jobs existed left with a passion for broadcasting and an interest that hopefully will stay with them and one they pursue.”

“I look forward to picking [my son] up later and hearing all about his day…”
“My son, came home yesterday with so much enthusiasm and information about his day. He has ADHD and if things aren’t interesting enough, or informative then he has lost focus-so well done to all of you and your team for making this work. I look forward to picking him up later and hearing all about his day.”
“My daughter came back looking so happy…”
“I just wanted to say thank you so much for giving my daughter and niece the opportunity to take part in such a dynamic holiday programme. They loved it, they learned so much new information and my daughter came back looking so happy.”

“I enjoyed the experience because it showcased what it is like to be behind the scenes on a TV set…”
“The Rise Academy workshop on the 20th Oct 2021 was particularly interesting to me because I got to learn about the key roles and the technology involved to make a TV production run so smoothly.
We were introduced to the 10 volunteers who all worked for major TV companies in the UK, such as Sky, BT, ITV and Discovery, each volunteer spoke in detail about their roles in TV production and what it is like to have a career in such an important industry.
We got to experience a 3-hour hands-on workshop, in which we set up a film studio by working in small groups supported by the volunteers to achieve this goal. And once we had successfully got the production equipment all set up, we were able to take upon the roles of producer, technician, sound engineer etc. we mirrored the volunteers by working their jobs to produce a TV quiz show with the other student members of our group.
For me personally, I enjoyed the experience because it showcased what it is like to be behind the scenes on a TV set and it gave me a comprehensive idea of what is involved in TV. It definitely allowed me to consider this as a career choice, because the workshop had shown how much fun and inspirational these careers can truly be.”
